Hold on to Your Dreams!

Hold on to your dreams!

All men dream but not equally!
Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds,
Wake in the day to find that it was mere vanity.
But the dreamers of the day are dangerous men.
For they may act on their dreams with open eyes to make it possible.

Hold on to your dreams!

When I was a young girl, I chanced upon a book of Greek mythology which started a lifelong yearning to go to Greece. While the other children played in the yard, I day dreamed of mythical monsters, gods and goddesses and fantastic adventures in this fairytale land. Once I discovered that Greece was indeed a real country that it was possible to visit, there was no stopping me. I declared passionately to everyone who would listen that I was on my way to Greece.

I got teased about it mercilessly at school and the light hearted banter from my friends at University also did not deter me from my determination to get there. By now I had learned about the philosophers, the architecture, the history, the cuisine, the sundrenched islands and my imagination had taken me to newer heights of longing. I could never see the word Greece without smiling.

One of the boys at my college used to sardonically say that if I ever did get to Greece, then I was the “Queen of Sheba” and he was King Solomon. He really thought I was dreaming impossible dreams , because when we were children, going to Greece seemed like a very remote possibility and one needed to save a lot of money to get there. Don’t ask me why, but as far as I was concerned, that was tantamount to waving a red flag at an enraged bull!

I had no idea how I was going to get there, but I was certain I would! Well, as it turned out I took some foreign language classes as a hobby on the side, to ease the pressure of a science curriculum, and earned a scholarship to Paris, France. At the end of my year there as a student, there were some University trips for students scheduled, including one to Greece. I made haste to sign up only to find out that due to a lack of the minimum required participants, the trip had been cancelled and that we would be going to Italy instead.

I was a tiny bit disappointed, but figured Italy was closer to Greece than staying in Paris and that I would go anyway since it was still in the right direction. It occurred to me that I could leave the trip when we were close enough to Greece and travel further on my own ! My fellow students in France all laughed again, mystified by my optimistic determination to get there, regardless of the impediments.

As it turned out the bus drivers girlfriend was in Greece on holiday and he desperately wanted to meet her, and he asked us if we would mind terribly if we changed the itinerary slightly to do a week in Italy as planned and the last two weeks in Greece! Would I MIND ?!!

It was the best two weeks of that entire year as I pinched myself endlessly to convince myself that I was really there! I soaked in the sundrenched  ruins of temples to ancients Gods, talked (in German) to the elderly villagers in the mountains (sadly they spoke and understood German only because of World War II), walked with sweet burdened donkeys, ate souvlaki “schwein” grilled on open fires,  feasted on freshly made feta pancakes for breakfast  in rustic cabins in the misty mountains,  visited the more famous sights like Olympia, the monasteries of Kalambaka, the Acropolis, Delphi and enjoyed the hospitality of village folk on the islands of Corinth, Ionnina, Corfou and Igoumenitsa. It was a wonderful, wonderful summer.

Ah, and yes, I wrote a postcard to my friend James :

Dear King Solomon,
I am writing from Sunny Greece – it is all I dreamed it would be and more! I hope that some day you will experience the joy of seeing your own dreams come true.
Hold on to your dreams!
