The Windmills of your Mind

By · Comments (0)

I heard this beautiful song for the first time in the earlier version of the film “The Thomas Crown Affair”, and the lyrics were a source of endless fascination to me weaving a rich tapestry of visuals for the pathways of meandering thoughts in our minds.

Here are some of the lyrics so you can judge for yourself what I mean…

Like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel,
Never ending or beginning on an ever spinning reel,
Like a snowball down a mountain or a carnival balloon
Like a carousel that’s turning running rings around the moon.

Like a tunnel that you follow to a tunnel of its own,
Down a hollow to a cavern where the sun has never shone,
Like a door that keeps revolving in a half-forgotten dream,
Or the ripples from a pebble someone tosses in a stream.

Team Morale

Team Morale

The proverbial Elephant in the room !  Everybody knows it when morale is plummeting, but few realize that it is gaining momentum until after it is too late and not much can be done to restore it .

And yet, all along,  it has been right there staring them in the face and trumpeting up a storm, but each person politely looks away and goes about the day in the vain hope that if they ignore it , it will go away.  Sound familiar?

Sinking Team Morale  is one of the Red Flags of many more serious issues that need to be dealt with , as soon as they are observed, instead of being swept under the carpet. The result of doing that is dangerous not just to the emotional health of an uncared for team, but also to the productivity and resultant profitability of the company.

Succession Planning

Passing the torch is an ancient tradition with a modern twist.

The origins of the traditional lighting of the torch lies in Ancient Greece where the fire was kept burning throughout the celebration of the ancient Olympics to commemorate the memory of Prometheus, who as Greek mythology would have it, had stolen fire from the Greek God Zeus.

A ceremonial lighting of the torch was performed by eleven vestal virgins in ancient times at the Olympic site by kindling it by the pure rays of the sun, concentrated through a mirror.

Taken at the Flood

By · Comments (5)

For all the scientists who are still pondering what made the dinosaurs extinct, here is one! Adapt now or miss the boat and become extinct!

One of my favourite quotes from William Shakespeare, goes like this :
There is a tide in the affairs of men,
which taken at the flood, leads on to fortune.
Omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and miseries.
On such a full sea are we now afloat.
And we must take the current when it serves, or lose our ventures.

And here’s another – source unknown:
Ah, “All things come to those who wait”
I say these words to make me glad
But something answers soft and sad
It comes, but often comes too late!

This Business of Hearts

By · Comments (0)

The wise men of yore had it right.

Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all – Aristotle.

Let’s face it. In todays corporations we like to consider ourselves “business like” and “professional” and prefer to ignore that we are working with human beings and that everyone has feelings and a very human heart- sometimes sensitive and sometimes strong.

So on the occasion of  the universally celebrated Valentine’s day, let’s look at the proverbial elephant in the Corporate Boardroom that everyone is trying to ignore. This matter of Heart.

Infact, while we are at it, lets look at the entire herd of stomping elephants because there are many hearts in there, each pounding to the beat of a different drummer.
